Denise de la Cruz: Professional Biography
By Denise de la Cruz
Combining her first love for the arts and the written word with her newfound passion for the digital world, 23-year-old Denise de la Cruz is excited to delve into the domain of new media design and is driven to succeed.
Born on August 15, 1983 in Manila, Philippines, Denise had never imagined a career in new media. Growing up, she engaged in various traditional creative pursuits including creative writing, drawing, playing the piano, and ballet.
In 1994, along with her parents and two younger brothers, Denise migrated to Ontario, Canada. It was a year later, at home in Toronto, when she discovered what she now considers her ticket to the world: the internet.
Denise transformed from a simple internet user to an aspiring developer in no time. Her stacks of spiral notebooks, sketchbooks, and music sheets were soon put aside in place of a computer screen, floppy disks, and in 1997, a handheld scanner.
Denise eventually decided to pursue a career in the field of computer technology. Fresh out of high school in 2002, she attended the University of Toronto to work towards a degree in Computer Science.
Despite her enthusiasm, however, Denise realized that although she loves working with computers, the technical and mathematical aspects she was learning did not interest her. Instead, she was drawn towards the social and creative aspects of the field.
She made a major switch to communication studies in 2003.
In the spring of 2006, Denise graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Semiotics and Communication Theory, with a double minor in Book and Media Studies, and Writing and Rhetoric.
Currently, Denise is working on a post-graduate certificate in New Media Design at Centennial College. She is thrilled not only to find a practical use for her degree, but also to finally pave the way to her dream creative career. It's her best accomplishment in the making.
